Weekend Box Office: 'Avatar' Sequel Tops U.S. Charts Again, Sets Sights On 'Titanic'
Weekend Box Office: ‘Avatar’ Sequel Continues to top the U.S. charts for a seventh week in a row, setting its sights on the box office record of James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’. This weekend, the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi blockbuster 'Avatar' has proved it has staying power, continuing to dominate the U.S. box office despite strong competition from other new releases.
'Avatar' Sequel Continues To Top U.S. Charts After 7 Weeks
James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar sequel continues to dominate the weekend box office, with total domestic grosses of $744 million and counting. After 7 weeks in theaters, the film has now surpassed its 2009 predecessor and is set to overtake the record-breaking 1997 blockbuster 'Titanic' as the highest-grossing movie of all time.
The original Avatar was released in 2009 and grossed $760 million domestically. With its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, already grossing more than $744 million, Cameron's epic is just a few million dollars shy of overtaking Titanic's all-time high of $2.19 billion.
Avatar 2 has been raking in the big bucks for weeks, thanks in part to its strong performances on both IMAX and 3D screens. The film had a particularly strong showing this past weekend, making up nearly 60 percent of the domestic box office receipts with a total take of $26.8 million.
Despite Avatar 2's impressive run, other films were still able to make an impact this weekend. The comedy Like A Boss made $3.8 million, while the horror flick The Grudge opened to $3.5 million.
Avatar' Set To overtake 'Titanic'
The latest installment in the Avatar franchise has continued to dominate the box office, topping the U.S. charts for seven consecutive weeks. Now, the sequel looks to overtake Titanic as the highest-grossing movie of all time.
With $2.8 billion in global earnings, Avatar is just shy of Titanic’s record of $2.8 billion. Though its run may be coming to a close soon, Avatar is continuing to take its place among the most iconic films of all time.
James Cameron, the director of both Titanic and Avatar, recently said in an interview that it would be “amazing” for Avatar to overtake Titanic’s record. He spoke about how it was special to him to see two of his movies compete for such a huge milestone.
For its part, Avatar continues to draw in big crowds and praise from critics. As of this weekend, Avatar is projected to make $15 million in the U.S., pushing its global earnings closer to the all-time high set by Titanic.
It will be interesting to see if Avatar can top Titanic’s record, but regardless of its success, the film has already earned a place as one of the most successful films of all time.
Other films in the running this weekend
Though Avatar has been the king of the box office for the past seven weeks, there were several other notable releases this weekend. The highly anticipated horror film A Quiet Place Part II opened in second place, taking in an impressive $19 million domestically. The fantasy adventure film Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway came in third place, earning a solid $12.8 million in its debut weekend.
The comedy French Exit also opened in limited release this weekend, earning $260,000 from just 25 theaters across the country. The drama Those Who Wish Me Dead was another new release that performed well, taking in $2.8 million. Last but not least, the critically acclaimed drama Nomadland debuted on Hulu and earned $3 million in its first weekend, making it one of the highest-grossing original films released on the streaming platform.
